Welan gum is a good quality viscosity modifying admixture.The use of viscosity modifying admixtures (VMA) has proved to be very effective in stabilizing the rheological properties and consistency of self-compacting concrete (SCC). SCC is known for its excellent deformability, high resistance to segregation and use, without applying vibration, in congested reinforced concrete structures characterized by difficult casting conditions. Most of the commercial VMAs currently available in the market are costly and increase the price of such a concrete. Identification or production of new low-cost VMA is then essential. This paper presents the performance of four new polysaccharide-based VMAs in enhancing the rheological and consistency properties of cement paste.
The study of the rheological properties and consistency of cement paste to screen the dosage and type of new VMA to be used in SCC is a promising approach. Investigation was carried out on cement pastes with combinations of various dosages of new VMAs and of a superplasticizer (SP) to study the influence on rheology, consistency and washout mass loss. A commercial VMA designated in this paper as “COM” was tested for comparison. The study on new VMAs is encouraging and confirms that pastes with satisfactory rheological and consistency properties comparable with or even better than commercial VMA can be developed. The combined use of proper dosages of VMA and SP is shown to clearly contribute to securing high-performance cement pastes that is highly fluid yet cohesive enough to reduce water dilution and enhance water retention. Attempt has also been made to correlate rheological properties (yield stress) to consistency (slump) of pastes.

Welan Gum is a biopolymer employed in food industry as thickener. This paper evaluates its performance as mud thickener and filtrate loss additive. Tests revealed that welan gum, even at low concentrations, effectively boosted mud viscosity and yield point. Tests were also conducted on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a commonly used mud thickener. Compared with CMC, welan gum is more effective as mud thickener, but welan gum has no effect on mud filtrate loss. welan gum mud was also tested at elevated temperature. The viscosity of welan gum mud was stable under short-term and long-term heating. Sodium chloride and calcium chloride were added into welan gum mud. Test results showed welan gum mud was resilient to sodium and calcium contamination. welan gum has good potential as mud thickener under high temperature and high salinity conditions.
Drilling mud plays a critical role in the success of oil and gas drilling operations. It cools and lubricates drill bit, controls well pressure, transports and suspends cuttings. Mud must have a relatively high viscosity to effectively suspend cuttings. Therefore, mud thickeners are often added into mud to boost mud viscosity. The most widely used mud thickeners are carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) and hydroxy ethyl cellulose (HEC).

Welan gum microbial production characterization and applications

Microbial exopolysaccharides are of high molecular weight, environment friendly valuable natural polymers, having applications in diverse areas such as food industry, pharmaceutical industry, cement systems and cosmetics industries. Welan gum, a microbial product holds an important place among the exopolysaccharides due to its novel properties and potential applications.
The biopolymer welan gum is synthesized by the fermentation process mainly by the Alcaligenes sp., and is composed of polymer of tetrasaccharide backbone chain containing l-mannose, l-rhamnose, d-glucose, and d-glucuronic acid. Biosurfactants may be involved in pathogenesis

Bio surfactants may be involved in pathogenesis due to their surface activity; however, for security and regulatory reasons, production strains should be nonpathogenic. In the above mentioned example of rhamnolipids this is not the case as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the most common producing bacteria, is a pathogen.

A variety of methods for the screening of biosurfactant producing microbes has been developed and successfully applied. Since the 1970th there have been various trials in this field. These screenings have mostly been limited to a manageable number of samples. In recent years automation and miniaturization have led to the development of high throughput methods for screening of biosurfactant producing strains. A broad application of such methods could eventually lead to the desired upsurge of new commercially interesting strains.
Biosurfactants may be involved in pathogenesis

An efficient screening strategy is the key to success in isolating new and interesting microbes or their variants, because a large number of strains needs to be characterized. A complete strategy for screening of new biosurfactants or production strains consists of three steps: sampling, isolation of strains and investigation of strains. Theses steps will be addressed in the next paragraphs. Bioinformatical approaches like homology search are not included herein.

In this study, the bacterium Bacillus licheniformis has been isolated from oil reservoir; the ability of this bacterium to produce a biosurfactant was detected. Surface properties of the produced biosurfactant were confirmed by determining the emulsification power as well as surface and interfacial tension. The crude biosurfactant has been extracted from supernatant culture growth, and the yield of crude biosurfactant was about 1 g/l. Also, chemical structure of the produced biosurfactant was confirmed using FTIR analysis. Results revealed that, the emulsification power has been increased up to 96% and the surface tension decreased from 72 of distilled water to 36 mN/m after 72 h of incubation. The potential application of this bacterial species in microbial-enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) was investigated. The percent of oil recovery was 16.6% upon application in a sand pack column designed to stimulate an oil recovery. It also showed antimicrobial activity against the growth of different strains of SRB (sulfate reducing bacteria). Results revealed that a complete inhibition of SRB growth using 1.0% crude biosurfactant is achieved after 3 h.
