Rheological properties of a new microbial polysaccharide, diutan gum in aqueous solution have been systematically investigated. It is found that molecular aggregates of diutan gum can be formed at a very low concentration (0.12 g/L), and the mechanism of thickening by diutan gum is proposed.
The viscosity retention rate of diutan gum changes little when increasing the temperature from 298 K to 348 K or in a high salinity solution (55.5 g L(-1)). Gel structure can be formed in the diutan gum solution, owing to the finding that the dynamic modulus has an exponential relationship with the concentration. The gel properties of diutan gum are not sensitive to temperature, and are virtually independent of cationic environment (Na(+) and Ca(2+)).
The temperature/salt tolerance of the diutan gum solution is mainly attributed to its perfect double helix molecular conformation, the location of the side chains of its molecules, and its water retention capacity.

The viscosity-modifying admixtures (VMAs) contribute to the control of the rheology of grout and are used to enhance plastic viscosity, cohesion, stability, and resis¬tance to bleeding of cement-based systems. This paper reports the results of an investiga¬tion on the effect of VMAs, namely two types of diutan gums and a welan gum, on the rheology behavior of cement grouts. All mixtures were made with two types of superplas¬ticizers. The dosages VMAs were 0.05%, 0.10% and 0.15% with a fixed water-to-cement ratio of 0.40. The investigated fresh properties of the grouts included the mini-slump flow, Marsh cone flow time, plate cohesion, and rheology parameters: namely yield value and the plastic viscosity. Both rheological parameters were obtained using coaxial and vane viscometers. Two control grouts (with and without superplasticizer) were also tested and compared to mixtures containing VMAs. The results indicated that both types of diutan gums were better in controlling the grouts fresh properties and rheology compared to the welan gum.

Welan gum is a viscosity-enhancing admixture used to retain some of the free water in cement-based materials and modify flow properties. The incorporation of welan gum and super-plasticizer can enable the production of highly flowable, yet stable systems with relatively low yield value and moderate viscosity. Such flow characteristics are useful for proportioning underwater concrete, post-tensioning grout, and self-consolidating concrete. Despite recent advances in such technological areas, limited data are available on the effect of welan gum-superplasticizer combinations on physico-chemical characteristics and kinetics of cement hydration. The study reported here was undertaken to evaluate the influence of welan gum and a naphthalene-based superplasticizer on fresh and hardened properties of cement paste with 0.40 W/C. The performance of reference grouts made without any admixture and those made with super-plasticizer were compared to the performance of mixtures made with 0.025, 0.055 and 0.075% welan gum by mass of cement. The effect of the admixtures on consistency, rheological properties, and stability of cement paste as well as setting time and changes in heat flux are discussed in this paper. Test results on hardened cement paste involving mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and compressive strength development are also given.

The dead oil viscosity was 5.5 cP at 25 °C, and 3.1 cP at 85 °C. Viscosity was measured with a torque-type viscometer at varied temperatures and shear rates. Oil recovery was measured with core flooding equipment.

The test matrix is given in Table 1. For the first group of tests, WLG was added to water at different concentrations and the viscosity was measured at varied shear rates. For the second group of tests, NaCl was added to WLG solution to test its tolerance for sodium ions. For the third group of tests, CaCl2 was added to WLG solution to test its tolerance for calcium ions. Fourthly, WLG solution was aged at 85 °C for 6 h to test its stability under long-term heating.

Welan gum (WLG) is produced by fermentation of sugar by bacteria of the genus Alcaligenes. The molecule consists of repeating tetrasaccharide units with single branches of l-mannose or l-rhamnose (Rakitsky and Richey 1992). The molecular structure is presented in Fig. 1. It was reported that WLG exhibits good viscosity retention at elevated temperature, and in the presence of sodium ion (Chen 2007). WLG was patented to be used as cement additive (Allen et al. 1991) and water shutoff chemical (Hoskin et al. 1991). However, limited research has been conducted to investigate its effect on oil recovery. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of WLG as a polymer for EOR.
Certain chemicals, such as polymers and surfactants, can be injected into reservoirs to improve oil recovery (Sheng 2010; Gao 2011). Polymer flooding is the most successful chemical EOR method. Large-scale polymer flooding projects are being carried out in China (Gao et al. 2014). This method is also being tried in Angola and Brazil (Morel et al. 2010; Bruno 2010). The most widely used polymer for commercial EOR projects is partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM). However, HPAM is rather sensitive to salinity and temperature (Gao 2013). The industry has been looking for a polymer that can tolerate high salinity and high temperature.
